How Long Does a Candle Last? Burn Times by Size

Burn time depends mostly on how much wax is in the jar, and on how you burn it. Here are our numbers, and how to get every hour out of a candle.

Our burn times

SizeWaxBurn timePer hour
Small, 4 oz amber jar3.5 ozAbout 25–30 hours53–64¢
Large, 9 oz amber jar7.5 ozAbout 40–50 hours48–60¢
Tumbler, 11 oz glass tumbler8.5 ozAbout 45–55 hours51–62¢
Extra large, 16 oz glass jar13.75 ozAbout 60–80 hours38–50¢

That works out to roughly five to eight hours for every ounce of wax. Bigger candles cost less per hour: the extra large burns about half again as long as the large for $6 more.

Make it last longer

  • Get the first burn right. Let the melted wax reach the edge of the jar before you blow it out, about two to three hours the first time. Soy wax remembers that first melt, and a candle put out early will tunnel down the middle and waste the wax around the sides.
  • Trim the wick to ¼ inch every time. A long wick burns hot and fast, and smokes.
  • Burn it for three to four hours at a time. Long enough for a full melt pool, not so long that the wick mushrooms.
  • Keep it out of drafts. Moving air makes the flame flicker and burn unevenly.
  • Stop at ½ inch. When half an inch of wax is left, the candle is done. Burning lower can overheat the glass.

Which size should you get?

If you light a candle most evenings, go big: the extra large lasts weeks. If you're trying a scent for the first time, the small is the low-commitment way in. Not every scent comes in every size; each candle's page shows its sizes. Shop the candles.
