What the ounces on a candle mean
A jar candle is often named for the size of its jar, not the weight of the wax inside. Our 4 oz amber jar holds 3.5 oz of wax, and our 16 oz glass jar holds 13.75 oz. To compare candles from different shops, look for the net weight of the wax (it's on the label) and the estimated burn time, not the jar size.
Which candle size for which room?
- Small (4 oz): a bathroom, a desk or a nightstand, or trying a new scent.
- Large (9 oz): a bedroom, a home office or most everyday rooms.
- Tumbler (11 oz): a living room or kitchen.
- Extra large (16 oz): a big or open-plan room, or burning one every evening.
A small candle can be faint in a big, open room, so for a living room or kitchen choose the 9 oz or larger. Scent also depends on the fragrance itself; here's how to make a candle smell stronger.
How long each size lasts
More wax means more hours: about 25–30 hours for the 4 oz amber jar up to 60–80 hours for the 16 oz glass jar. Burned three hours an evening, the 4 oz amber jar lasts about 8 to 10 evenings and the 16 oz glass jar about 20 to 26. Our burn-time guide has the cost per hour of each.
Candle sizes for gifts

- A host, a coworker or a housewarming: the 9 oz amber jar at $20. Two of them come to $40 and ship free.
- A bigger gesture: the 16 oz glass jar at $26, our longest-burning candle.

What about taper and pillar candles?
Taper and pillar candles are sold by height and width rather than ounces. This guide covers jar candles, which is all we make: soy wax poured into glass, with a lid on the two smaller sizes.
