Thanksgiving Candles: What to Light, and What to Bring the Host

Thanksgiving is about the food, so the candles should help without competing with it. Here's where scented and unscented candles each belong, and which candle makes an easy hostess gift.

Keep the dinner table unscented

A scented candle on the table competes with the turkey, the stuffing and the pie. Put Unscented on the table instead: soy wax and a cotton wick with no added fragrance, in the 4 oz amber jar and 9 oz amber jar, from $12. You get the candlelight without changing how dinner smells.

Keep any candle clear of table runners, napkins and centerpieces, and never leave one burning unattended.

Scent the rooms before guests arrive

Save the scented candles for the entryway, the living room and the guest bathroom. Light one about an hour before people arrive, so the melt pool has time to spread and the house already smells warm when the door opens. Fall scents that suit the day:

For the guest bathroom, something clean works as well as something cozy: Clean Cotton smells of linen, cotton blossom and lemon.

A candle as a hostess gift

A candle is an easy thing to hand the host. It doesn't need a vase, it keeps, and they can light it after everyone has gone home. The 9 oz amber jar at $20 has a black lid, so it looks finished without wrapping. Scents almost anyone likes are Vanilla Bean, Comfort Spice and Clean Cotton. If they're hosting Christmas too, Fresh Balsam is a nice nudge toward the next holiday.

For a bigger thank-you, the 16 oz glass jar is $26 and burns for about 60–80 hours. For a smaller one, the 4 oz amber jar is $12.

Going to more than one dinner?

Shipping is free on orders of $40 or more. Two 9 oz amber jars and one 4 oz amber jar come to $52, so they ship free: one for the host, one for the in-laws and one to keep.

Order in time for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26. Every candle is made to order: 2–5 business days to make and ship, then 2–5 business days in the mail. To have candles by Wednesday, November 25, order by about Tuesday, November 10 (the post office is closed on the 11th for Veterans Day). That's an estimate, not a guarantee, so earlier is safer.
